DepEd announces Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) schedule

In an effort to “awaken greater interest” in Mathematics among elementary and junior high school learners in the country, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced the 2019 Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) from December 2018 to March 2019.

Education Secretary Leonor Briones, in DepEd Memorandum No. 191 series of 2018, explained that the competition will be conducted by the Metrobank Foundation Inc. (MBFI) and the Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) in cooperation with the DepEd regional and schools division offices.

“The overall objective of the competition is to ensure maximum participation in improving the quality of mathematics education in the Philippines,” Briones said.

Specifically, she noted that the contest also aims to “challenge them [learners] to strive for mathematical excellence,” and “empower mathematical talents with awards and recognition for them to serve as models to the youth.”

Briones explained that the eliminations and division level competitions will be participated in by elementary and junior high school learners nationwide. “However, only Grades 6 and 10 learners can participate in the Regional and National Finals,” she added.

For the National Finals only the top scorers both Categories A and B in the National Capital Region (NCR); top scorer in each geographical area (the rest of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao) and the remaining top five scorers across all regions will be qualified as 10 National Finalists for both individual and team competitions in the elementary and junior high school levels.

DepEd explained that the two categories (A and B) are applicable for NCR only.

“This categorization was made to give regular schools chances to compete,” DepEd said, adding that this “has been the practice of NCR as the primary partner of MTAP when they initially started the Math Challenge.”

Category A is for regular public schools while Category B is for Science High Schools, Chinese schools, and other performing public and private schools identified by the MTAP and the City Schools Division of NCR.

Registration started in December 2018 while the elimination rounds are scheduled in January 2019. Division finals will be in February and the regional finals will be in March. The National Finals is scheduled on March 29 to 30, 2019.

DepEd reminded that “change in schedule of the elimination rounds and division finals shall only be allowed upon the approval of the national steering committee.”
